07/03/2010 Another Saturday Morning of Mayhem!

So I talked with Jason and he is up for some 40K this next Saturday morning.  I think we should do some one on one's though so we can get through the games.  Is everyone comfortable with 1500 or should we shoot for higher or lower?  I've tweaked my list a bit based on performance.  I've also created a whole new list with a different flavor all together.  Well tell me your thoughts...

  1. I would suggest playing the tourney level play at 1850.

get comfortable playing in tourney level point values

  2. Why do we need to get comfortable playing tourney level point values? Do you see some change happening in our current playing venue?

  3. Playing at tourney level point value is beneficial for everyone. Tourney level play allows players like wink who is more active tune him self to play at that point level.

beyond which 1500 point values are restrictive with the new victory conditions. at the high point value you get more flexability in all players armies so its not just what the bare minimum needed to be somewhat competative.

Plus the higher level point value allowes for more flexability and fiun in the lists. 1850 list are just funner to play with. * I personally like 2k - 2.5 k*

  4. Well he's right on a couple of points. One, I am going to start entering tournies next year, probably with Ardboyz. Two you do get to bring alot more to the table with a higher points value, which helps to even out any mistakes you might have made during the game. Though I want to make the point that I'm not pushing for this, I'm just asking what everyone is comfortable with.

  5. Okay, comment too subtle. I'll explain it to Wink in person on Saturday.

1850 is fine, I got more than enough models. 1500 makes it hard to field even a monolith, as 235 for a model that one quasi-lucky lascannon shot can bring down is somewhat pricey. Especially now that mech is king and it is an anti-infantry unit (as is virtually everything in the necron army now that glances cannot destroy vehicles in any reasonable amount of time).

  6. I guess Im not subtle enough why not be blunt we ae friends here :)

As far as the point value goes to be blunt 1500 point sucks. your looking at 3 maybe 4 troop squads your one hq and maybe one or 3 things beyond that.

I suggested 1850 just because its what the tourney basically play lets everyone play more stuff.

  7. All in all not a bad day of gaming. I think we all came away with a better understanding of the 5th edition and how our armies are to be played. I for one have confirmed that Space Wolves need to be in midfield to optimize their strengths. I tried to see how they would do in a sit back and shoot role and I didn't make it work at all. I will adjust me funzzy list and we'll have another crack at my tests. I need to find out the optimized army for my style of play. Well thanks to you guys for great input and good sports!

  8. I have confirmed that Monoliths need to use their Deep Strike rule or not be used at all. They are damn near impossible to get cover saves with, and with all the tank busting firepower that marines (and especially Tau) are capable of fielding their armor 14 might as well be an 11. For 235 points with so little combat potential they have to be carefully used.

Necrons suffer a huge lack of capability to deal with vehicles. A combination of short range coupled with virtually no weapons capable of a penetrating hit means that you're lucky to shake vehicles at best.

Paying 65 points for a 1 wound T5 short range lascannon on a mobile platform and no way to ablate damage doesn't help, either.

Unit wipeout preventing WBB is also a serious negative. Basically my best bet is to field a bunch of warriors, keep them out of melee, and worry more about surviving than inflicting any reasonable damage while trying to hold objectives.

  9. The gauss rule being replaced or reworded to become similar to rending (so they are capable of penetrating hits) would go a long way towards alleviating some of the issues. FNP instead of WBB would offset the unit wipeout (Until that game I'd never even heard that unit wipeout would negate WBB). And the necrons need more vehicles (not just one more, a couple more for various tactical situations).

Mech is definitely king, and any non-horde army without mech is at a disadvantage. Especially one with models that are as individually expensive as necrons. Forcing 10 man troop units at 18 points apiece with bolter equivalents doesn't help. :P

With some luck they are still damn hard to kill, though. If the unit doesn't break or get wiped out it stands a good chance of being a nuisance after WBB.

  10. Oh, maybe give Monoliths at least an option like the Tau have to always get cover saves. That might help Monoliths since they are so tall.

  11. Well as we play I see the Necron's disadvantages with the 5th edition. However, I can help but think there is a way to build them to at least compete. I guess I'll need to do some research...
